Word as Art
The •Buchstabenmuseum, which means "Letter Museum," is an archive of traditional typography, but we are not talking about anything for the faint hearted here, we are talking about HUGE 3D typography donated by people and collected by two designers.
Visits are by appointment only. The curators had just come from an event and picked up ‘WILLKOMMEN‘ and ‘SERVUS‘ (meaning goodbye, Bavarian style), so a new batch to add to their ever expanding collection. The Buchstabenmuseum website is being relaunched in the next few weeks I was told and the plan is for the typography to be set up as a permanent exhibition with a rotating ‘specials‘ section to this exhibition as well.
Meanwhile over at the •Deutsches Historisches Museum, the newest exhibition in the I.M Pei Building looks at the history of the German language. It is a relatively young language and is described in sources from the Early Middle Ages as the "language of the people". Among the rare books to be seen are the oldest book written in German, the •Abrogans, and the oldest book written in Yiddish.
